anyone pulled off the plastic skin and deleted the slide step to make room for internal storage in the tail gate? im not trying to smuggle drugs but same concept. i carry a large case for my tools but i can slim down and would like to make an organizer that i can weld or bolt into gate to hold my impact and other tools. ideas? anyone know depth?

i do not recommend it. first off, there are supports that run the length of the tailgate so you will only be able to use the top half. also it is covered with sheet metal and only has small holes and cutting it any more would compromise the structural integrity of the tailgate. you have the handle to worry about too. its dead center and takes up a lot of real estate. on either side connected to the handle are metal rods that release your tailgate when you pull the handle. again, right in the way. the other issue is weight. my tailgate is loose from offroading. now add an additional 20-30lbs in weight and im sure you are going to have more problems then its worth

It not impossible and can be done. This is done on a Toyota Land Cruiser.
