I have a 320GB Seagate hooked up to my SYNC thru USB2. It has about 14k songs on it (the point where sync wont let you use voice commands for tracks anymore; only artist, albums, genre)

At times (2 times a month) it will think that this is a new device and will re index.
The only time i take it out of the truck is to add more music and what not.

I believe it could be the heat or leaving it plugged in 24/7 . I guess calling her a B*T$% doesn't help either haha.

Has anyone else had this problem?

If you keep that up she'll stop doing ANYTHING for you. You may own your Raptor but she's in charge. Why do you think I had to replace 3 microphones? She didn't take kindly to me calling her names and raising my voice.

Seriously, I had no idea we could connect HDs with that much capacity.

They only time I've ran into that problem was over the winter months when the temperature was below freezing. When the hard drive got warmed up it was recognized again. Other than that, no issues. The indexing only takes about 5-10 seconds every time I start the truck now.

I've found that if I don't drive it for 3 days or so, it'll get confused and 'rebuild voice index'

Yea, what Harleyguy said has been happening too. When temp gets too cold or too hot it tends to happen more. Usually I get in the truck and as soon as i crank it up, the music continues playing. No indexing unless it has new songs on it.
Maybe i should start taking it out during the day and times of extreme cold and hotness. Doesnt even get that hot here. summer high was about 85-90....winter is going to get COLD. How do you Cali, AZ, TX guys do it?

I think with a Solid State HDD or a Rugged HDD this wont happen. But those are still quite expensive.

What version sync are you guys all running.

Is there a common hard drive vendor causing problems? (seagate, maxtor, etc)

Sometimes you can upgrade the firmware in the hard drive enclosure as well. there is a "bridge" chip on a board in that enclosure. It converts SATA/ATA interface to USB and sometimes there is a chipset across the board that causes problems. If anyone remembers the firewire chipset debacles of the late 90's in external drive cases you will understand my drift.
