Stealth Black Raptor R initial thoughts

Here’s a picture of my R for some eye candy.

Aside from all of the glorious wonderfulness that comes with this truck and spending what most here spent on it, two things have bothered me after owning it for 1k miles. Yes it’s my daily driver, and I drive quite a bit.

1. Day to day daily driving, it’s a bit sluggish, the truck just wants to be floored if you really want to feel what you spent your money on, otherwise I dare say my 2021 eco boost for daily driving might have been better. The Pro is when you punch it, it’s glorious, but are we all here flooring our raptor r every chance we get? Probably not. Think Tesla plaid, I’ve owned one, and that shit gets old.

2. Fuel economy, but before you even think about “wtf is a guy that buys this truck care about fuel economy for, stupid”. True I don’t care about mpg, but I care about range, my gen3 got 13mpg and a tank of gas got me 450 miles. I miss that. This truck gets me 340 miles on a full tank, that’s atrocious, maybe I’m spoiled, but I do not want to go to a gas station every 2 days, it’s a waste of my time. It’s a huge negative for me. What happens when the apocalypse comes and I can only go 340 miles on a single tank of gas? Survival for the fittest my friends.

Anyways this truck is dope but I am curious what other owners think of what’s been bothering me about my ownership experience

I do have to admit that the mpg on the R and TRX are bad but it is what it is. The only thing i miss about my 2020 is the fuel range. I could make it to AZ from my place on one tank of gas with like 15miles left on the range. On the TRX I get there on my second tank with about 50 miles left. My brother in law's R got to the same place with almost 80 miles left.

I’ve only noticed about a 100mi loss in range realistically.

I have gad my 24 R for a few week now and have not really noticed a huge difference in mileage from my 22 3.5. At least with my daily commute I set the cruise and roll to work. Now if I run it well she sucks the gas down. It has not been as bad as I was expecting it to be.

Range is the reason I don't want to daily an R or a TRX. I don't want to have to fill up twice a week. In my F450 with 86 gallons I fill up every 3-4 weeks. It's nice to not have to waste time stopping for fuel a couple of times a week.

Haha, that's harsh my guy. A Raptor is the best all around daily in my opinion, regardless of budget, I want to drive it everyday. The R is making me question that a bit. I do have another nice car, it demotes the R to a daily..

Those are the exact reasons that I never had any interest in the R. I was hoping that Ford would spend the money improving on the EB platform instead.

Love the wrap but complaining about miles out of a tank is about like complaining your Ford GT doesn’t have enough trunk space.
Oh yeah and I did add a banks pedal monster to mine. Found the beauty of that from my gen 2 that i was disappointed in. The R doesn’t need a tune. I haven’t been able to find where the power runs out. But the pedal monster makes it peppy.

I’m doing a similar set up with mine. Did you wrap the bumper and flares as well or did those just end up working out so well? Also your points are the reason I didn’t stretch for the R. 1. It’s not money smart at these prices at all lol 2. I’ll just do the goosetune set up on mine and hope that it’s enough for me lol. I’m sure it will be. But truck looks good man. love the stealth look on these trucks

Truck looks amazing all of your points are why I plan to just stick with my 22 3.5 its my daily and does everything I need. My need for speed it taken care of with my modified C7Z07. Do I still want one of course...:cool:

Man I'm so glad you said this. I kinda felt like I was going crazy and now that someone else has said exactly what I've been feeling I know I'm not crazy. I've been daily driving a gen2 with an aggressive tune for 5 years and still daily drive it. When I drive the R it feels lazy, like it doesn't want to go until you kick it then it comes to life. It also doesn't grab gears like I feel like it should at lower speeds. As soon as I can put this thing on a dyno with a new pully I'm doing it. The gen 2 with a tune just wants to go all the time feels effortlessly, if that makes sense.

The truck looks great with the stealth on black.

The small turbos are in boost a lot, even when you are not even close to WOT loads. That "in boost 25% of the time" is the feeling you liked with the small, turbo charged engine.

In the same scenario on the larger S/C engine- the bypass valve in the blower is normally open and you get no boost, since it doesn't need boost to pull itself along at that same load. If you need more power, as you found out, you have to put your foot in it. You have to go deep enough into the throttle to remove vac from the bypass valve, then it closes and the blower is fully "in effect". In that case, it's putting down another 50% (at least) over what the smaller turbo engine could do.

It's pretty much a Jekyll and Hyde setup. As long as the bypass is open- it's like a normal 5.0L truck (feeling kinda slow with the huge ass 37" tires) . As soon as the bypass closes- it makes full boost at any RPM instantly and it feels like a 500+ cu in big block.

The answer is out there- the OEMs are scared of it since they can't keep a drivetrain behind it at a price they like, it's spelled "t u r b o V 8"

So, I've got a 2019 with an MPT tune along with the R and I know exactly what you guys are talking about. Nothing crazy aggressive. Just their standard tune for a Gen2. I describe the tuned Gen2 as a hyena on steroids and the R as a lion. It's the aftermarket tuning that makes the gen2 so peppy. My wife doesn't like to drive the Gen2 bc when you touch the throttle it jumps. Before I put a tune on it, it felt like my previous F150 platinum. BUT, even though the baby Rap has more pep, it will never catch the R bc the power just keeps going in it.
When I test drove a TRX, it felt very similar. I wasn't all that impressed after driving my tuned G2. If you read on the TRX forums, you'll see a lot of those guys putting pedal monsters or pedal commanders on and thats what I did to the R. It takes the sluggish right out of it. The engine makes plenty of power, its just the pep that is disappointing. You can make the R jump as hard as you want with a pedal monster, just like your tuned Gen2. The difference is you almost can't find where the power runs out on the R. That thing just keeps pulling until you turn chicken and let off.
$200 and it doesn't void your warranty like a tune would.

Stock EB was a little peppier than stock R, but like the prior comments, if you’re into the throttle >40% R never runs out of power

Interesting to hear this feedback about the R - I'd be curious to hear more impressions from people using them as a daily. The fuel range is a really big negative in my eyes.

I damn near traded my '22 V6TT Raptor and a '23 Blackwing for a '23 R and revisited this thread so many times. Thank you to everyone I've quoted and those that I've not, as well.

The range is the kicker with what we do. Looking back in my post history if you want, the answer for us is always "Raptor". Driving to school? Raptor. Grocery shopping? Raptor. Driving to Atlanta or DC? Raptor. Longer road trip?

Still. The. Damn. Raptor.

Recently bought a Cadillac CT5V Blackwing with the big 6.2L supercharged V8. It's way aerodynamic compared to the Raptor. It weighs less than the Raptor. It hauls less crap inside on a daily basis than a Raptor. I still can't break barely 16mpg on average with it.

I want the V8 just to have the V8, I truly do. Someone I quoted said "the answer is turbo V8" for dynamics and having them spoiled more often and thus, removing the "sluggish" feeling. I feel no slug-anything in this Blackwing but again, way lighter and way WAY different in terms of automobile. It's also a manual transmission, so there's that advantage.

I'm gonna sell the Blackwing and I guess just pocket the money. Every time I want to get an R, I talk to those that have them locally or I read here and elsewhere, watch YouTube reviews, and then look at mine and just remember that it's badass on its own. Got the lights. Got the parts. Got the tune. It's everything I want, so I guess I should just stop.

My wife has the V8TT Porsche Cayenne Turbo S e-hybrid for if I ever wanna go fast. The Mustang is gone to get the Blackwing and the Blackwing will be gone to replace with nothing for the time being, I guess. Toss it in the brokerage. I think that's the plan.

The R is definitely not necessary, but I’m not sure I could live without something I can drive with a manual.
