Seeking Radio Advice

Just a heads up:

The F5021 is a Chase/race radio which means if you show up at an "event" and they are using a freq other than what you have programmed you are SOL unless someone has their laptop and programming cable. You cannot choose the exact frequency you want to talk on unless its programmed.



The radio that I sell is an Amateur radio and a lot more of a radio than the Icom 5021. You have the ability to choose any frequency that you need to talk on. Assuming that you have the correct license to do so. Also it is 10 watts more power.

Also my all inclusive kit is less money than just the radio at 99% of other retailers.

Almost all of the GLRE support trucks run the TYT and they work flawlessly with tremendous range.

Do we need any more channels other than the list provided by All The Way in the Programming Channels Into Your 2 Way Radio
thread? The intercom deal sounds nice. No more shouting at my passengers so they can hear me and it's something I could use when not at a "Raptor Specific" event.

Guess if I was made of money and wanted to go balls out on the radio setup the Kenwood TK-790H Remote Head would be the way to go with my initial wants according to PCI. Just don't wanna drop that much dough.

I myself have installed a few Raptors radios, VHF and UHF given the choices my choice was FT7900 simple easy and reasonable on price. Dual channel means you get more to talk to than just VHF and so far that came in handy once in a year... The cost of the radio being around 300 and then about 75 for antenna and mount. This gives you the biggest benefit of removable face plate and remote mounting of head unit.. It works well, Icom is probably one of the best so you cant go wrong with that either.. Radio adjustments on the QT just pm me for more questions in that regard...

I bought the builder 4 package from PCI. Not being radio savvy, I ended up at HAVOC not being able to listen or modulate as the specific TRR frequencies were not programmed in my 5021. Truth is, it's not a radio that you can program on the fly. That being said, if you tell PCI the frequencies that you want added to the 5021 they will add them at no cost prior to shipping.
I did end up buying the programming cable and software that gives me the ability to add various frequencies, however, it takes time and a laptop to upload the added frequencies to the radio.
Not too convenient IMO.
In short if I had to do it over again I would take Kanakrys advice and buy a radio that is programmable on the fly.

I have the programming software etc, its actually pretty easy once you write the program it takes about 1 minute to upload the list... I do it so often its just second nature to bring my laptop and cable on every run for both yeasu and Icom radios. Anyone needing changes let me know I can do it on the runs I go to and if you ship it to me I can load it for you and send it back..

Which antenna? PCI recommended the No Ground Plane Antenna 2.4 db Base Loaded with Spring 134-174mHz. It's been ordered, but I may be able to catch them tomorrow morning before it ships if this isn't correct.
