I'm wanting to replace the door speakers. Yes, I've read 50 threads on the subject, but they all seem to devolve into "it's not worth it", "you need to do the amps", etc. I appreciate all the suggestions. But humor me, please. All I want is to replace the speakers. No new amp, no new sub. Just replace the stock speakers with something a little better and spend as little as possible.

I have a screw with the Sony system. I read one thread which recommended the Polk IC570 speakers as a good replacement for the Sony speakers if you intended to keep the stock amp.

Any other brand/model suggestions for something that works well with the stock amp?

5x7/6x8s All around, and I read that the fronts you can install by removing the grill, but the rears need the door panel to come off.

Any links to a good install video or guide?

I'm also confused as to the tweeters. If I replace the 4 door speakers, do the stock tweeters stop working? Can't I just buy two new tweeters and replace the stock ones in the A pillar? How do those come off?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Ok, just in case anyone else might be interested, I pulled the trigger on 4 Polk Audio db571 speakers and 2 Polk db1001 tweeters. With Metra wiring harness the whole thing was $190 shipped from Amazon.

Amazon.com: Polk Audio DB571 5-by-7-Inch Coaxial Speakers (Pair, Black): Car Electronics

Here's a great video on removing the door panels. Looks easy.

The plan is to remove the old speakers, plug in the new speakers. I like simple.

The tweeters might need a little more effort. Here's a link to a how to remove the A pillar. I'm guessing there will be some wire splicing needed to attach the new tweeters. I read somewhere they'll fit behind the OEM cover, but that I may need to get creative on how they attach. I'm not handy with a drill, so let's hope no blood is spilled during this operation...

i didnt see crossovers in that setup. not having crossovers means you will be using the oem caps on the tweeters. not a problem but you are using a coax set in the doors and then adding tweeters. that is going to be a lot of highs. and without the tweeters protected, you migh run the risk of blowing the tweeters in the pillars at higher volumes.

What is protecting the tweeters from blowing now?

The center channel speaker was another mystery asked 100 times but I could not find a good answer. It's a 3.5 inch speaker, and fairly deep. The problem is that most 3.5 speakers I see are

A. sold in pairs. I really only need 1.

B. The tweeter sticks out like a sore thumb. It might not fit under the OEM grill.

I'm looking at a set of Kicker DSC35, as it was one of the few that doesn't have a tweeter sticking out. Need to think this one through. $35 for the pair. It looks like it uses the same harness as the door speakers. I'll know for sure when I install next week.

the oem tweeters play lower frequencies than the aftermarket ones. there is a cap inline to them right now, but since they are designed to play different frequencies, they may be a little low for the new ones going in. the center channel speaker is not worth replacing. but if you want to, i would recommend using the same brand speakers all the way around. dont mix speakers brands. you will have your sound imaging off if you do

Thanks for the tip. I looked at the Polk 3.5 inch speakers, but I don't think they'll fit. The way the OEM grill sits on top of the center speaker, it doesn't look like there's enough clearance for the tweeter. Most of the 3.5 speakers I've seen have a honking tweeter that sticks out. From looking at the OEM speaker, the replacement needs to fir flush or close to it against the grill.
