Raptors built during COVID

Hello,
I purchased a brand new 2020 Raptor couple months ago that had a build date of September 1, 2020.

This is my first Ford product, and I haven't closely examined Raptors previously, but the fit/finish/paint quality leaves a lot to be desired in a $75k car. Yes, I've read similar complaints on the forums, but bear with me..

Wondering if all Raptors (or Ford products) have similar issues, or if perhaps the ones built during COVID were rushed to get back up to speed on inventory/demand after the factories opened back up at half capacity/short staffed/shortened hours of operation, etc.

Issues I'm seeing:
orange peel every where
high points/low points in the paint
speck of dirt here and there beneath the clear coat
worst of all, thin paint/not full paint coverage in some areas (you can flash your light on it and see the metal underneath)
speaking of really thin paint, already a few rock chips on the hood and front skid plate (it's painted silver..i always thought it was bare metal)
some panel gaps not perfect
left and right side of bed not equally gapped

while im complaining, let's add to the list
a short 1-2 second grinding sound around 4-5k rpm before up-shifting
during slow acceleration, sounds like marbles rolling around
a low frequency ticking sound while idle (like valve ticking, but not high pitched)

So do you think the vehicles built during COVID were just not up to par?

maybe the machines got sick and caught the virus.......


seriously though, the paint has been an issue on several occasions. lots of people over the years have had complaints. what happened with them, i couldnt tell you. i dont think its a wide covering problem, but definitely have seen a few complaints regarding paint on both gen trucks. rock chips are going to happen,nothing you can do about that unless you wrap the truck. the marble sound might be a vacuum line for the 4wd system? try going into 4wd and see if it goes away.

I've said this before...

The raptor is NOT a $75k truck.

It is a $30k F150 with $45k worth of performance and features upgrades. Oh and that $30k base f150 isn't even $30k. They can be had for <$25k with end of model year rebates typically...LOL

For the mechanical noises, take it in to the dealer, its under warranty. Cetrainly shouldn't be getting a grinding or marbly sound.

The ticking sounds like an injector tick. If you're not used to direct injection it can sound like a lifter.

I have zero fit/finish/quality issues on my 2019. I’m not sure what your expectations are, but a mass produced pickup is not a hand build Rolls Royce.

Some orange peel is common on all mass produced vehicles. Sorry, there isn’t someone at the end of the assembly line wet sanding and buffing each truck as they roll off the line every 52 seconds.

How did you determine the paint is thin/not full coverage in some areas? Did you use a paint thickness gauge? I have never seen any factory painted vehicle where you can “see metal” though the paint; if the paint is thin you’ll see primer, not metal.

The ticking at idle is the high pressure fuel pump, it’s completely normal; I don’t know why you’re complaining. As far as a rattle shifting between 1st and 2nd gear, it could be a vacuum hub lock issue which is easily repaired. Try the same thing in 4WD Auto, if the noise goes away, have the dealer repair the vacuum hub lock system.

I have thin paint coverage under the front headlight plastic surround. My truck is white so it's real obvious against the dark colored plastic. But like someone else said here, I chalk it up as being it's a F150 with a bunch of expensive parts tacked on, I'm not that surprised.

I picked up my fresh off the line 2020 802A in April. The only problem I had was the hood and passenger door needed to be realigned to correct a poor gap. My paint looks amazing since I had it corrected and ceramic coated. I love the truck.
