I'm in CA and the only time I've ever gotten grief for my tints is when I was at the airport and it was about a year or so after 9/11. Even then, cop just let me go on about my day. If I did get cited, I'd just pay the fine.

I can second this. To all of you saying tint laws are stupid and petty, try stopping a car and walking up on it with pitch black windows and not knowing who or what is inside and then come talk to me about your feelings.
Well you can see inside of a lot of tint. I understand no 5% on top of the 70% already there, but a lot of places have enough vague statements that can be implied that only the stock windows are ok, that’s a probable cause excuse and gets used as such.

50% on the doors will certainly let you see inside the car. The magistrates here dismiss all of those tickets with a photo that shows you can see the driver, but that doesn’t stop the officers from using it as a fishing excuse. That kind of stuff creates poor relationships and some cops really give off the vibe that they prefer it that way. I don’t tint my doors or windshield here because I don’t want to be bothered and I don’t want that kind of relationship with my local PD.

This is pretty funny actually. You just did to me what you're accusing me of doing. Read it again. Slowly. If you still don't understand what I wrote, I'll try to explain it to you. I may have to take back the part where I called you brilliant if I do. :)
Ok I can see there is zero point in debating an issue with you, as I made zero assumptions about your post and referenced exactly what you said, while you claimed my argument was about defunding the police? Where did I mention that at all? Please do explain it to me, slowly. Let’s not pretend your use of the word “brilliant” was anything less than sarcasm and the fact you would claim it as anything less would be nothing but disingenuous.

So, MANY years ago a really good friend of mine bought a clean, nice 350 ’72 Cutlass in the traditional Oldsmobile green. Not super fast but not slow either. Not long after buying it, he’s stopped and for no other reason than there was nothing better to do, he’s roadside interrogated, refuses consent search and is detained. Drug dog called, arrives some time later and what do you know - dog “alerts” where handler tells him to alert, which in MD gives the green light for a search which reveals.

Nothing.

Aside from about 2.5 hours of wasted time as the local PD tears the car apart trying to find something - ANYTHING to justify the stop. They found nothing, because my buddy was as straight as they come; Boy Scout level. He gets a warning and on his way.

They way I know this was not a stop with reasonable suspicion - cops put everything back like they found it. Anyone in LE knows, this doesn’t happen.

You can flaunt tint, plate and other petty infraction laws you want but I have better things to do with my time than sit on the side of the road discussing the finer points of detention, in custody, reasonable suspicion and at what point I am free to return to my lawful business.

I know that tint is PC for a stop. But ever since I grew out of my teens/early 20’s, I somehow managed to quit getting pulled over, despite my vehicles getting nicer with age.

My rule is this, don’t act/drive like a ******* and 99% of cops won’t bother you for the little (tint and front tag) things. If/when they do stop you, be a respectful and polite adult, and again the overwhelming majority of cops will let you go.

I have dozens of pictures of my 2018 802A Magnetic Raptor before I had the windows tinted, but I will be %^%* if I am going to help someone break the LAW, by fraudulently sending a picture of my truck in place of their own! The nerve of some people to come on here and ask me to be an accomplice to this type of criminal activity! I would NEVER participate on an open forum with someone this deceitful towards their local government agencies...

Hmmmph!
