Well, I got to 500 miles and changed the oil. Always do around that mark with any new engine. What a gigantic pain in the a$$. Anybody know where to get a oil change valve that mounts in the plug hole? Something with a tube to bring the oil past the skid plate. Which I had to remove. Ridiculous.

Oh yeah. The first oil change makes you feel like a complete amateur.

Get the Fumoto valve and drain the oil right into a jug.

You gotta have 2 fluid basins to remove the filter. Oil can come out at 2 points because the filter is above the cross member.

Don’t let the first oil change stop you. Each one after gets easier and more satisfying.

Does the gen 2 not have the little trough/spout under the filter?

On my gen 1 I just turn the filter a half turn or so and let it drain out, then unscrew it the rest of the way.

Second cleanest oil change vehicle I have had, with the first being my wife’s LR4 where we use a vacuum to remove the oil and the filter is a top mount cartridge.

As far as a drain valve I use the stahlbus oil drain plug. Not sure if they make on for the gen 2 though.

Yes, there is a plastic trough that diverts the oil on the front and rear of the cross member.

Depending on the angle, you might get oil at the front or rear. So you gotta be ready with two basins.

The real issue is the drain plug. So you need some sort of valve to control the oil stream.

I stopped fussing with it - just remove the skid plate completely every time now and its so much easier. I like to take a good look around and wipe everything anyway....its only a few more minutes to remove it completely each time

Yep, this ^^^^ is how I do it. With the skid plate(s) removed, you can do your own eyeball inspection of everything to make sure nothing "sneaks up on you" with the drivetrain. For the oil draining, I still use the original OEM plastic drain plug and also use an old quart diff/trans oil bottle cut away on one side to direct the oil so it dumps right into my drain pan with no mess or drips. My driveway is fairly level and I don't jack the truck up for access, so the oil from the filter always runs out the rear drain trough so no mess there either. About every other change, I add a tiny bit of anti-seize to the skid plate bolts to keep them lubed fairly well, so they don't wear out too quickly.

I have 45k+ miles on my 2018, so I've changed the oil/filter 9 times. I rotate the tires every 10k miles, still on the original BFG tires. I jack only one side at a time with one big jack set right about the middle of the truck on the frame rail. It will lift both tires off enough, so I only swap front-to-rear, no side switching.

You’ll get better at it..The skid plates are never easy, especially by yourself. Can’t wait till you decide to change the front diff fluid...you think you’re pissy now

Look at roninfactory.com for the plug. I don’t know of a metal pan for the Gen II....
