This is the best place I could figure to post this. Im looking to do a full time on board air system to run a few tools possibly a train horn and inflate tires and I was wondering who was done this and any suggestions really

youll need a big air tank for tools. most tools are 5 cfm. I used to have a 10 gallon one and it ran out all the time, now for garage im getting a 80 gallon.

Here's the one we have had good success with VIAIR super duty, 35" tires, 33% duty cycle, 3.21 CFM @ 0psi

Where do u mount it at
if you have factory steps it could be mounted under passenger area up front, the ones we have done in the shop we have put the spare tire up in the bed, and mounted in the spare tire area under the bed, with a simple bracket.

With the tank mounted in that area, what kind of protection does it need and where did you mount the motor?

we build a skid plate, with dimple die holes, that we mount the compressors to. [they provide drainage and venting for air flow to keep compressors cool. there really are a number of ways it could be done, they is a decent amount of room in that area. It is really just up to you and the resources you have.
