In my opinion (mechanical engineer) you did more harm in not breaking in your engine properly than you would by going synthetic. Unless of course you didn't keep a constant speed that 1600 miles, I don't see too many people on the freeway in new cars going from 40-70-40-70...etc. Modern engines are made pretty well, they don't require a lot of the "old school" thinking to keep in good running order.
