I'm going to install a voltmeter gauge. Is any switched power source good enough or is there a specific spot I need to connect this gauge to?

Sorry, don't know what pkp means. I even Googled it and came up with Polish Railways. Don't think that's it. ;)

I did it on my old Nissan D21. Any 12 source will do as long as it's not hot until the key is turned. A volt meter tells you three things:
- When you turn the key to the accessory stop with the engine not yet running, it'll give you battery voltage.
- When you're starting the truck it'll give you an indication of the draw from the starter. Look quick.
- When the engine is running it'll give you alternator output.
Volt meters are way more useful than ammeters.

I'm curious, Z. How/where are you going to mount the gauge?

I PMed SDHQJason to check the price of the steering column single pod. That's Plan A. If it's too much in the way, I'll wait until the A Pillar mounts are ready from them, which should be any day now.

I saw it mounted in place of the 12V outlet on the dash, but my Nexus 7 is covering that spot. Plan C is the Roush air vent solution.

Here it is, but I'm replacing it with another gauge with red marks. This one is blue and just looks out of place.
