You should not be smelling gas. Have you gotten under the truck and looked to see if it’s wet anywhere? If not crank it and then get back under and make sure there’s no leak anywhere. With it running the fuel system will be under pressure and maybe you can find something. Check under hood also. Make sure you locate the fuel filter and insure it’s dry under pressure. I have an 18  of course no gas cap but 0 Oder of gas at anytime. It really sounds like you have a leak somewhere. Check on top of fuel tank also around where the pump and sending unit goes in. Maybe when you fill it and it sloshes it could be coming out around the cover plate. Good luck and Ihope you locate the source of5he smell.
