I have 2 new front shocks sitting on the bench. Can I do the Mid Perch mod without any special tools? Is this the best time to do it and how difficult will it be?

guess what im doing right now? im doing mid perch mod on the girlfriends truck. all you need is an allen to loosen the set screw. if the springs are on, then you need to compress the spring to gain access to it. if no springs just go for it

The first shock went real easy. On The second shock the collar wouldn't slide at all by hand. I had to use a hammer to get it to move up to Mid Perch. I removed the set screw all the way out and it was still a pain. Did I miss something?
