Need Advice on Loud No Drone Exhaust

Should I pull the trigger on a new "TRUE DUAL" muffler setup with magnaflow magnapacks?

I DO NOT WANT FLOWMASTER TYPE DRONE. I dont mind some "noise" though, that's what I want, an aggressive sounding Raptor that sounds as mean as it looks.

I need some advice that will lead me to a setup with close to "no drone".

I also need some advice on if it's worth going "true dual". Can this truck even utilize "true dual"? If so, what size?

I can't commit to the idea of headers right now.

If running stock manifolds and stock cats you'll want to run as much of the stock tubing as possible. The dimensions before and after the Y pipe should be followed as closely as possible. The stock muffler is the restriction, the stock manifolds are next, then the cats, but the tubing is not the restriction.

Going true duals on stock manifolds and stock cats slows down velocity and low end torque is lost. A simple muffler swap is the easiest way to get a great sound, and if the correct style muffler is built, more low end torque and hp throughout the rpm range.

A lot of people simply remove the muffler and run only the resonator. This is a great modification for power and the sound is really aggressive. Another consideration is drone. There will be a fair amount of drone when removing muffler. To cancel out the dominating frequency (drone) we can simply build a helmholtz resonator so that your truck isn't annoying on the highway.

Hahaha just don't get an electric cutout like I have. It doesn't "drone" but since it flows well it just doesn't drone. But it loud as all get out inside the cab. But I can close it anytime I want. I NEVER close it though! And I get a lot of compliments on it all the time! Also, its between the muffler and resonator so I still get an even tone. Not splattery! Oh and I've had it a year and 1 month and it works perfectly! Idk why a few people get leaks. And I rarely ever oil mine! That's actually what I'm working on. Haha. I'll try and get a few exhaust videos up since there aren't that many up right now.

dirtydeeds, thank you. I find that very helpful. How does one get a Helmholtz resonator?
You provide a good case against true dual, there are setups like the mbpr that still deliver aggressive sound without going dual.

Take a look at our group buy pre-order for the Corsa Xtreme. It's definitely loud, and Corsa is known for keeping drone to a minimum.

I'm following this thread. I thought I wanted lightening style exit though.

dirtydeeds what's your take on exit behind wheel (stock)vs exit in front of wheel(lightening)?

A helmholtz resonator is really easy to make, it's harder to explain it to your local shop, than it is for them to make it. Most guys are gonna look at ya like you're crazy, I know that's what I did the first time I was asked to make one. Now, I've literally made hundreds of em for several different applications, including Raptor's. They're just a 26" (or so depending on the frequency you're trying to cancel out) piece of tubing branched into the exhaust system and capped on the end. There are a couple of different formula's used to figure out the length. There is helmholtz math, and 1/4 wave math. I've tried both on a Raptor, and they both work about equally as well.

As far as exit location, it's pretty negligible where the exhaust exits (between the 2 choices you've presented) Either exit will work equally as well when comparing HP and TQ, the sound will be slightly different, but the difference there is just a matter of preference, there is no right or wrong answer there either.

The thing to consider that IS critical is the design/engineering standpoint. You want a system that doesn't stray too far from factory dimensions. That's why I always say to do either a simple muffler sway, or a simple bolt on which maintains factory dimensions as closely as possible....yet removes the factory restrictive muffler for either straight pipe, or a muffler similar to a Borla or BAmuffler.

dirtydeeds thanks again! Do you have photos of the Helmholtz on a raptor? I doubt I'll want it that loud but I'm interested in what it looks like.
