My final solution went in a different direction.  I bought a pair of 4.5W LEDs from Amazon (see here:  [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007PBPI68/ref=ox_ya_os_product]2x Custom Black Anodized Aluminum 6500K Xenon White 4.5W SMD LED Eagle Eye Lamps Back Up Backup Reverse Parking Light For Car Van SUV Coupe Sedan : Amazon.com : Automotive[/ame]) and did a little simple wiring with the 7-pin trailer connector to wire them into the back-up circuit.  Problem solved, and it wasn't expensive in the slightest.
