Hey all ,

I've got a 2013, 6.2 - and it now has nearly 170k on the clock. I've read these engines can make 300k, if treated well, and I think I've got one of them. I've always used T6 Rotella in this truck, and I've had several other vehicles go past 300k using that same oil. This one appears to use no oil between changes, done every 6k miles. To date, this engine has basically been bulletproof - VERY pleased with it - other than the power loss at altitude, which is another topic.

That said, on a recent trip I got a pretty severe misfire when I fired up one morning - and that has never happened before. It was bad enough that it actually made the whole vehicle shudder pretty harshly - and it immediately began displaying a blinking CEL. I stopped, popped the hood and looked around. Seeing nothing obvious - and hearing no sounds of potential spark arching - I shut it off and just sorta turned all of the plug wires anyway, in the event one or more was "leaking" spark to ground. I fired it back up and it was immediately fine. I cleared the CEL of 2 codes for poor catalyst performance - which made sense given unburnt fuel from dropping cylinders. Everything operated fine for the remaining 900 miles of the trip... fuel mileage hadn't dropped either.

I'm thinking that's likely an indicator that the wires are shot, at a minimum... and after 170k miles and more than a decade in a dry climate, it woudn't be surprising.

So... before I just order OE replacements, I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for "improved" wires and coils. I'll replace the plugs too... I use NGK iridium plugs in everything I own. If there's any other components you feel might be contributing to the problem, I'm all ears. I'd like to essentially give the whole ignition a fresh start.

If anyone has thoughts/suggestions regarding wires and coils - or any other ignition components - I'd be grateful for the input.
Many thanks,
Dave - 2013 in Colorado

I personally would not run MSD coils. Motorcraft or NGK. A good set of wires will come with Pills. I would water test the wires. (How To) start the truck take a spray bottle of water and do one wire and coil at a time. spray them down one by one. if you got a bad one or 2 they will show up for sure. when you do the plugs "MIND THE GAP" This is important.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, agreed... I stay away from MSD. Just take a good look inside one of their ignition boxes... messy work at best.

Appreciate the troubleshooting tip, but at the age/mileage of this truck, I intend to refresh everything rather than just replacing the culprit(s).

When i joined the windows edition club@100K, I went with OEM wires and coils and NGK plugs.

I found very few good reviews of MSD for the Gen Juan
