The cap must be unscrewed to access the dipstick. The dipstick stays in place between the cap and a flange on the housing. The dipstick itself is bright yellow plastic and only a few inches long but has cross hatch (fluid level markings) like your typical standard dipstick. The trans fluid must be hot and engine running to check the fluid. If you check it without the engine running, chances are fluid will spill out of the hole. This hole is also where fluid is added.
