Grill Slats

I am sure this has been addressed, but I can't find it. I was adjusting the BD behind grill light bar and noticed the slats on the rear part of the grill move to open or close position. What is the purpose of this and when do they move. It's connected to a motor, but this is new to me.

It’s for aerodynamics as they close at speed. The process for front mount Intercooler is to take the grill off and use a tool and cut them out of the frame of the grill and zip tie the motors out of the way. There are some on the bumper intercooler also.
