When you guys installed, did you need to account for the height difference between the plastic covered side rails and the rail behind the cab? It’s maybe 1/8” difference or so.

Can you attach a 270 canopy to those smartcaps easily? or do you need a rack ontop of the shell to attach to?

The Smartcap comes with t-slot rails on the roof panel. Depending upon the mounts your canopy has, it might be possible to utilize those channels. Otherwise we do offer a number of racks and cross bars that you could mount the canopy to.

What's the difference between the Gen2 vs Gen3 caps? Can a gen2 fit on a gen3?

Gen3 is slightly longer to account for the redesigned tailgate. We have seen folks move the caps between the two models, but the Gen3 does fit the Gen3 better than the Gen2 does.
