Gen 2 in the Sand!

I have done some deep searches and found varying results. I would like to source all the information into one thread so here we are:

I've taken my truck to the dunes several times. I've run it in the Sand/Mud mode and aired down my tires to 17 psi. (They are E rated 35's).

What settings do you guys run your tires and truck on while on the sand?

Is it easy to debead your tire off the wheel? I'm not super experienced in this area.

Some people on here say that you should stay 20 psi + to avoid the risk.. but I found my traction went up substantially when I went down to the 15-17 psi range.

I ran 1500 miles through Baja sand, mud, rocks at varying speeds from 2mph all the way up to 117mph.

I was at 19PSI cold, which translated into 21-23 PSI hot. I didnt slip a bead, i didnt change a tire. I honestly didnt feel inclined to even look at them.

I was running method 701s with the v-grip tech at the time.

I then did 750 miles of silimar terrain, just at a bit faster pace with BFG KR3 40" tires on fifteen52 wheels, which use a similar bead grip tech to raceline ( which is who makes their wheels for them) with my 40s set to 22 PSI cold, which parked them at 25 psi Hot. Some guys are running the 40s at pressures up to 40 psi in the dirt, but i prefer the small bump compliance of the lower pressures.

again, didnt lose a bead, didnt have an issue.

most of the duners that i know insist on beadlocks. I'm more of a trail/run/race guy.

Wow! Great feedback. Btw, I spent a solid 45 min today looking over your build. I’m going to go for that in the next couple years if at all possible.


V grip tech... you were not running bead locks then?

I also prefer the trail and desert run type terrain but occasionally hit the dunes.

Yeah, my build snowballed. I'm almost at the finish line for what I feel is "finished". I'm aiming to be done with the "build" by march/april. The cage/seats/harnesses should be the last major project. ( then I'm sure I'll use this one for Baja runs and will start dreaming up my "hi-test" build. ) I'm working on getting my super duty "chase ready" right now.

the "trail series" methods ( 70x series) have a specialized bead retention design that is better than normal wheels, but not quite as much grip as a legit beadlock.

They are lighter than beadlocks and in my testing, provide very similar performance unless you are running really high horsepower or really low tire pressure.

Raceline has really similar functionality built into their wheels too.

At the Dunes, I air down to 17 psi and run in Sport Mode, 4WD in high and Traction Control Off.

Zombie you still running those Method 701's ?? Been seriously looking at those lately due to that bead grip technology. I wish they had a few more designs with that bead grip though.

nope. the hub bore is way too small for my currie's hubs. I'm running fifteen52 wheels now.

I run 14 psi cold and have never had a bead issue. 19 with stock wheels and tires.

I run 38 psi in my 37" KM3s on the beach. Even in deep, soft sand there is minimal slippage. Why air down if you don't need to?

nope. the hub bore is way too small for my currie's hubs. I'm running fifteen52 wheels now.

How did you like the wheels before you changed to a Currie set up
