If you want all the power the truck can produce put in Premium just as the manual states. If you do not care about that put in 87. The engine will adjust timing and boost based on knock. End of discussion.

Just took a long trip to Colorado and followed my habit of buying 91, since 93 is rare around my area. My sales rep told me that it will burn 87, but won’t run as well, so on my way back, I changed to 87. On the interstate, the difference was unnoticeable, though my trip computer must have noticed, because my total, projected miles, before empty were significantly lower than previously. However, once in town, it is immediately clear that the engine isn’t as responsive or quiet as it was before. Can’t wait to fill up and burn off the 87 octane.

My first 2 k in miles was 93 O and I got 18.6 MPG on a road trip. MD to MI and back.

Then one week later

Second road trip, another 2K miles, all 87 O and I got 18.5 MPG. MD to GA and back.

Do your own test, but if its Highway go low. If towing go high.
