Hey y’all,

So in light of the recent stories of theft among the raptor community, I have started to become concerned about the safety of my truck living in Dallas. I have never thought about this problem before but given that it took me a little over half a year to get my gen 3, I don’t even want to think what insurance will try to pull on me godforbid it does happen.

I plan to relocate the horns into the engine bay so that a thief cannot simply cut the horn wires rendering the alarm useless. I also considered options on reinforcing the key hole on the drivers door but that’s another story.

When looking at the horn I noticed that there are shutters behind the front grill that do look like they can close and open. Not that it’s worth much defense but aren’t these shutters supposed to close when the vehicle locks?

I’ve seen luxury cars with this feature too. Once I saw one that had metal shutters and when locked they would close essentially preventing any access into the engine bay whatsoever. The raptor ones are plastic but nonetheless without horn relocation, it could still delay a thief’s intentions to try and break into the car.

Has anyone seen these shutters close and know if there is a way to have them close when the vehicle is locked? I have yet to see them closed on mine so I’m thinking maybe they are broken?

Cheers!

aren't those for the intercooler but it needs to be cold enough to make them close for emissions or something... could be wrong but based off what I have heard

I think they may activate on a cold start up, when it is actually cold
I don’t think they close by default on start up and I don’t know of a practical way to do that.

Fellow DFW'an here - want to do the same with horn wires. Let me know what you figure out.

I was told the "active aero" is meant for fuel economy...

But I do not know how they operate. I would imagine they close at highway speeds to reduce drag...

But I'm just spit balling here.

I believe the shutters close on startup in cooler temps. They open when operating temp reached. I believe they open and close depending on conditions and as mentioned for aero/fuel economy.

The wires don’t need to be cut but the thieves can just unhook the horn wire.

I'm with you on this and plan on doing something with my Gen 3 for security when it comes in. If theives use a tow truck its theirs but up to that point I want to give them a run for their money with all sorts of boobie traps if possible.

Things I have considered are:
1. lock box
2. horn relocation or reinforcing the wires
3. jimmy jammers
4. kill switch
5. Ravelco (but I heard don't bother)
6. Maybe even a ring doorbell mounted in the vehicle that would alert me if anyone is peeking into it??

I'm open for any and all ideas. Insurance would be a nightmare including not paying what its worth and the year long wait it would take you to even possibly get a new one. Mine will live in Baja part time so its a whole different ball game down there.
