So is this the infamous forscan everyone speaks of? Plug in and connect to laptop? Any brands people prefer or is it just so simple it doesn’t matter

This is the one I have which automatically switches CAN buses to access all modules at once. The ones you have shown will work however you will have to manually toggle when accessing different modules.

Other things to note:
Make sure you have a newer windows laptop, macs will not work
The actual software license is free, no need to purchase one unless you want to support
For god sakes back up your 'as built' data just in case a module doesn't write correctly

Just take your time and double check your code inputs. It’s worth it. Especially the glare free headlight stuff. Very cool.

for your dongle/interface.....this one:

it's the best of the "recommended" ones by Forscan and I can tell you, it works slick. No muss, no fuss, no switches....just works

probably the most important step in using Forscan is BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP! Steps to do this are in many places but be sure you have a good copy of all original (as built) modules Forscan finds. That way when F U B A R happens you have path back.
