The OP's experience rings true. I visited 4 different dealerships in as many cities and was in contact with 2 more before I found one that seemed motivated to actually sell a Raptor to me. Some of the statements made by "salesmen" were quite revealing:

- "We've never had a Raptor here." And that was the limit of what that salesmen would say about a Raptor.

- "We don't have one, but we have quite a number of other trucks on the lot. What would you settle for?" No kidding. I walked into the dealership ready to spend tens of thousands of dollars of my hard earned pay on a truck, and the salesman's first instinct is to inspire me to "settle" for a vehicle I'm not interested in.

And then I met a newly hired kid at the branch dealership across the state line of the dealership in my own town. He had a Raptor on the lot, let me drive it, took my order and $1,000 deposit, and made it happen. If you find a salesman who genuinely wants to help you get what you want, you will also find the right dealership. For the record that young salesman was John Philyaw at the Woody Anderson Ford dealership in Fayetteville, Tennessee.

..

I went to a dealer in silver city nm to see what the numbers would come out to with my gen 1 ford raptor and cash.

I let them test drive my truck for the appraisal which they offered 2.5 grand under kbb value. Then i asked if i could test drive the truck and they said no we dont want to put miles on our truck since we are charging 10k over. In my head im thinking you just gladly drove my truck 10 miles and tested the 4x4 and ur charging 10k over msrp in a town in the middle of **** no where new mexico. I happily said no thanks and walked away and the way they took care of their vehicles looked like shit

Edit: drove by the dealer 3 days ago both 2018s both sitting on the lot

The context of Phat’s conversation with the dealership is missing. If it went something like

“Yo, you gon’ let me feel out this *****”

I can see the reluctance.

If it went something like “Hey, I see you have a Raptor, mind if I take it for a spin?” Maybe not such a good business plan, particularly if you roll up in a beater ’92 Explorer with the fenders falling off.

If, however it went like... “I’m for real, got financing/cash, I can lay down $xxxx.xx now. I want the truck, but I need to drive it first.”

well, it’s their truck but if they want to sell it, they may want to consider an attitude adjustment.

They weren’t sitting on lots when I was shopping, so I really can’t accurately say how I’d have reacted but I have pretty high confidence the word “F*ck” would feature prominently, as it did with the local dealer who wasted my time by inviting me in with the siren song of an msrp price, and adding the $10k ADM at the signing of the order paperwork.

That being said, it’s important to not burn bridges if at all possible. If it is at all within your capabilities, keep that seething rage and the desire to spew profanities to yourself and express your dissatisfaction calmly but with zero ambiguity.
