Costco vs Synergy+ Gas Comparison
Mobil/Exxon recently introduced a new premium fuel with a 93-octane rating and no ethanol. They are making several claims about this new fuel blend including cleaner engines, better fuel economy and better engine performance. I decide to compare my Stock 25,000-mile 2018 Gen 2 Raptor with my normal Costco premium gas to the new Synergy fuel.
My Current Fuel Economy is as follows:
Costco 91 with ethanol Synergy+ 93
Hwy fuel economy 18.5 mpg 20 mpg (Ave speed 65 mph on cruise control)
City fuel economy 17 mpg 18 mpg
For the performance claim my comparison will be subjective. I drive under the ”Normal” mode with a 50/50 mix of city and highway driving. I would say that I am a slower, speed limit driver with auto stop/start engaged. However, I did notice an increase in performance. My acceleration, especially when merging on to the highway and passing other drivers seemed more spirited. For the cleaner engine claim, I have no way to test. Since both fuels are ”Top Tier” fuels I will call it a tie.
Now for the price difference. In my area Costco fuel is $2.68 per gallon while Synergy+ is $3.03 for a difference of .35 per gallon. Total difference per fill-up is $12.60. With an average fuel economy of 17.75 mpg under Costco and 19 mpg fuel economy under Synergy+ for a difference of 1.25 mpg. Total increase in mileage per tank is 45 miles (36 gallons x 1.25).
With a cost of $12.60 vs mileage improvement of $7.18 (45 miles/19= 2.3 gallons @ $3.03 per gallon) for a difference of $5.42 for each fill-up from empty.
Tell me your thoughts. Do you agree with my analysis and my math? I am going to switch from Costco to Synergy+ when I can. I am thinking that the higher octane and with no ethanol, it may be a better fuel. Also, with the performance improvement Synergy+ is worth the extra costs. Please respond with your observations. Has anyone else tried Synergy+?
