Has anyone installed one of those Builtright Molle panels on the underside of the console lid and attached a handgun in a holster to it? Just curious if it was too heavy for the lid to stay up. Before you suggest a console gun safe, that's a little more.......time consuming access wise than I'm interested in.

Thanks!

I’ve not, but, just thinking with my out loud keystrokes here; How do you deploy the gun from said storage without sweeping either passenger to your side, in the rear or yourself? Even if it’s just to holster up.

I’m not trying to be all gun safety puritan here, ... ok, yeah, I am. But additionally, to me, the kind of gyrations to make that work seems awkward.

best guess, scandium J frame mounted at the bottom may work, allowing the lid to open, it’s just a tick over a pound loaded. Pocket 9/45 like the XDs or Hellcat ... maybe. They’re about 20 ounces unloaded though and I’d suspect the lid is not going to like staying open with that much weight on it. but that’s a guess.

Interesting thoughts, you put a firearm in your hand inside a vehicle from the drivers seat, you're usually going to sweep SOMETHING regardless of where it is, even on your hip. With a carjacker at the window or door, risk vs benefit. If you unass the vehicle before you get your hands on it (if you have time) less chance of that. S&W J frame, .357.

I know its not the BuiltRight that you asked for, but there is a thread on here for the E and G console vault with several members showing how they have built in mounts. If it is unlocked while driving, would allow you one extra flip up of the lid and not sweep others. E and G fits extremely well and is lockable for when you want it to be lockable. I do have several other BuiltRight products and they are all top notch in quality.

I have the builtrite molle panel installed sans gun. I have a few items like a knife, flashlight, etc. and its starting to get at the upper limit of what it will hold open on its own. the slightest breeze or passenger shifting will knock it down.

Why not mount something on the driver’s side wall of the interior of the console? Holster/Velcro or even a magnet. Assuming you are right handed it would seem to be less awkward than all the arm twisting required to draw off the underside of the lid with your strong hand. Plus, you could open the lid and use your right hand to rest on the grip in anticipation for a draw. A draw from here could be straight up, muzzle over the hood, and you wouldn’t sweep anyone in the truck as you swung to the driver’s side window. Just a thought...

Off body or on it’s tough to draw from a seated position in most cars but it can be done. I’ve done it from a strong side OWB holster live fire on a range, both shooting out the driver’s side window and through the front windshield (removed for safety of course). But that was another life.

As always, rehearse with an unloaded pistol until you settle in with what works for you. I think Galco used to make a belt holster specially for this. It mounted to the belt horizontally; something else to throw in the mix.

Thanks for all the input, sounds like the weapon might be a little heavy for the lid. I will look at the E and G. I also thought about mounting on the interior side of the console to take advantage of the natural position, just hadn’t come up with something I like.
