I am trying to figure out the best way to securely transport two bikes and gear while chasing riders in the baja 500. In the past we have only needed to carry one bike, but this year we will have another rider with us. Does any one have any experience or suggestions on the best way to do this? I cant decide if I should go with a "bed buddy" and pack all the gear in like I'm headed to the track, or have a custom bed rack fabricated to securely strap down the bikes, tool box, cooler, ect. Raptors have small beds, so i have a feeling I'll be playing tetris loading and unloading gear.

I think having a rack might just take up space in your bed and make it harder for things to fit. I think just having two bikes tied down with two straps around the bars and tied down around the rear wheels to keep them from moving side to side while going over bumps should be good enough. That's what I did while off-roading in Colorado and it worked pretty good. I'm guessing you're planning on having the tailgate down?

here, on frf
load one facing forward and one facing backward. this will allow the handlebars to clear and allow more useable space.

Had something almost identical to this on my old dodge short bed... Soooo worth it! Makes tying down bikes ALOT easier! Especially if you only need to unstrap and pull out one bike.

Bit of advice... get a piece of stainless steel angle and mount it on the back side, up under the lip of the bed. It'll make things super rigid and reduce the risk of pulling tearing the sheet metal. Im sure washers are fine... but Im **** on things like that. Like to DOUBLY make sure theres no chance of things getting fawked up.

If you have the loot get a custom one. At least it will be exactly what you want.

I cant decide if a custom rack would be better or just take up more room, and the only way to tell is to actually get one made. I guess it has never been done. I have seen some crazy chase racks for race vehicles but bikes seem to get thrown in the back of vans while in baja.

Just thinking, but what about adding a roof rack? Could do something removable like thule or yakima. Give you more cargo space. Not ideal to add weight to the roof but you're probably going to be taking it easy with the 2 bikes anyway.
