We had a locally manufactured solar cooker when I was a kid in Africa. It was basically an insulated box with a glass top, and a lid whose underside was covered in a layer of shiny metal... you aimed the lid so that the sun would be reflected through the glass into the box.

It worked ok for heating, if not actally cooking... it would take a couple of hours at least to make a pot of coffee, but it worked great to keep the coffee hot etc.

Wow no kidding? Pretty cool. Seems like a good substitute for the traditional heat lamp then.

BTW how long were you in Africa? Born there?
