Saw where another reputable tuner is saying that you can only run 93 (not sure about 91) octane after doing long tubes and CAI and that pinging will insue if you don't. Have you had any issues like that? I already have your SCT xcal3 but still need to contact you about my tunes.....I will have the Kooks w/ cats and Magnaflow along with the AFE and want to be able to run an 87 economy tune along with an all out 91 performance tune as well.

you may run a little lean at first but the computer should learn pretty quick... after that you will be fine...

That depends who made the tune. Some tooners like to turn off things like O2 sensors so the PCM loses the ability for adaptive strategy I had a JDM 87 octane and it spark knocked its ass off with 87 octane when I put 93 it still spark knocked just not as loud. If the tune is written for 93 octane it may or may not spark knock with 91 octane because with 10% to 15% ethanol it's actually higher anyway.

Maybe I misunderstood the OP, but I thought he meant headers and intake on an untuned truck...

If your tuner is turning off your rear O2 sensors and you still have OE cats you need to get a new tuner. Doing so is going to either cause knock like Tank says, or will cause you to run rich will destroy your cats and make you run like ass...

Regardless of your mods, unless you are running an insanely high CR, a good tuner should be able to tune any mods to whatever octane they want... simply backing off timing will generally fix it, unless your octane rating is so low that your engine trys to turn itself into a diesel.

Hi Give us a call.. As long as the tune is set up for the certain octane with certain mods you will be just fine.

thanks
Mike

You can't run any CAI other then a K&N without a tune on newer Fords it will cause them to go to limp mode. L/Ts will cause the same thing because of the movement of the O2 position and high flow cats don't scrub as well as stock cats. My rear O2 still work and I have high flow cats and the truck still has the ability to run E85 and adaptive strategy but then again my tuner has over 18 years of experience and most of it is F-150s.

Their statement....."We will offer tunes from 87-93 octane but 93 has to be run after you install the headers, air kit, or both. The change in the air fuel mixture makes it hard to keep the engine from pinging."

I take that as being tuned or not, you have to run 93 after those mods........which doesn't make sense to me because like you guys said, the tuner himself should be able to adjust for the conditions in his tune.

That is either laziness or inexperience or a combination of both on the tooners part. Your truck can run both 87 and 91+ from Ford there is really no reason to disable that ability. What this tells me is the tuner is turning off the O2 sensor and the knock sensor why they would do that on a simple CAI L/T setup is beyond me. My tuner IIRC doesn't do an 87 octane tune he does a bad gas tune which basically the same thing.

@socomech If a tuner told me that I would never go back... at best they are selling a canned tune, at worst they have no clue...

@tank not sure what your expereinces have been but I know plently of people running cold air on 04+ F150s with no tunes and no problems. Hi flow cats are a different story... if they are not hot they will almost always throw a CEL on just about anything.

Sorry I should have worded that better Roush, K&N, and a few other don't require a retune but most do. The 04+ F-150 has the thing like the Mustang if the MAF sensor is not in the 150% same position it will but it to limp mode. I know JLT requires a retune and I believe Airaid and AFE also do.

Matt you got your X3 from SDHQ right who does there tuning or are they selling SCT base files?
