John M BUNMAN
BUNMAN-Adventures, Rescue & Recovery
My 2021 Additions of Arizona and Utah just Arrived!!
I’m already updating it with past Trails/Hikes and looking for my Next Adventure.
Before Navigation Apps, YouTube and the internet to research your every turn on the Trail, we had Maps and a Compass. If you hit the Trail today w/o a PAPER MAP and a Compass, You my friend are preparing to fail and Hopefully have the ability to contact your local SAR Team
Before my Best Friend Neil died, he would call me and let me know he had a day or two off. This was code for “ John, he called me John because, that’s my name, Look at the Map and find us a place to get lost” Half of the Joy of the Adventure was Not Knowing what lay ahead of us on the Trail.
I was setting up Land Navigation Courses at Fort Hunter Liggett when the Soldiers started showing up with the Handheld Garmin’s. An incredible tool! I would let them get deep into the NAV Course and then take it from them or take their batteries.
Oh what fun it was…
Stay safe my Raptor Brothers and carry a Back-Up…
Addition: I wanted to add a 20 something Hiking story. I ran into a young lady hiking by herself in the Lake Mead RedStone area. She never saw me until I was about 10’ from her She was new to Hiking and had her head buried in her NAV App, trying hard to stay footstep by footstep on the Trail it showed, She was missing the Amazing Scenery all around her. We talked for a bit. I told her there wasn’t an exact route out there and that it changed every time it rained.
I believe we parted ways with her less dependent on her electronics and looking forward to a greater appreciation of the Journey…
