170 Degree T-stat

I have been contemplating adding a 170 degree thermostat when installing my new MPT tunes. The guys at MPT said it’s a good start (as I’m not doing the intercooler now) and will help with heat soak.

My biggest concerns is how well the truck will warm up and give me heat in the winter months with the adjustment.

So far I’ve seen usual driving temps of 210-216 in warmer months of August and 205-208 in the current colder temps (26-36 F range so far).

Anyone running a 170 t-stat in northern area?

I’ve never believed in this option. They engineer these engines to run at 200-220 for the reason. If you are overheating lowering the opening of thermostat may initially slow it down, but it’s going to eventually overheat anyways. You probably need a bigger or more efficient radiator if you having issues.

I live in jersey and I have had zero problems with the engine warming up and blowing heat. Quick and cheap mod that works. Just make sure you tell Mpt to change the fan settings that way they turn on early to work with the t-stat

what benefit are u seeing?

Just runs a little cooler when really getting on it and stays more consistent with the temperature.

While I haven't changed the thermostat on my Raptor I have in other vehicles and the one thing it absolutely did not do was give more consistent temperatures. They were all over the place. A PCM tune helped a lot but it was still nowhere near as consistent as the stock thermostat. The vehicle in question was supercharged with overdrive pullies. The idea behind the lower temperature thermostat is it made the AF ratio more on the rich side helping to reduce knock retard. I highly doubt you'll see any real benefit on a stock Raptor. You may notice reduced economy though. With a tune that includes higher boost levels, it may help with KR.
