An update to this issue for anyone having a similar problem in the future, I was able to make some progress on the source of my issue. While driving in 2H the "thumping" noise is quite noticeable, when I go to 4H the noise stops. So it looks like yet another problem with the **** IWE. I had both...
I’ve read a lot of threads about clunking and thumping noises, but I can’t find one that specific to my issue and that has a solution.
Without any incident or recent work done on the truck, I have a thumping/clunking noise coming from the truck. Pretty loud and sounds like it’s in the front...
I believe it was around $1230 for the springs. This doesn’t include new u-bolts. A big saving for me was being able to drive 1.5 hours to pick them up in a place I was going to visit anyway for another reason.
Yeah I'll give the leaf springs some time to settle, then I'll look to see if I want to do a drop shackle. In hindsight I should've just waited on the shackle until I saw where the truck would sit, but wanted to do it all at the same time.
They seem to know what they are doing and they were...
Thanks for all of the feedback, I ended up finding a place about 1.5 hours west in Grand Junction, Colorado that makes leaf springs. They are called Alcan Springs. I had them make me some +3” springs with an additional 200lb load capacity (removing the 2” block for a 1” lift). This saved me...
I replaced Nitto trail grapplers with these Falkens last year because of moving to Colorado from Florida. The Falkens were great for me in the snow and have been good during the summer too.
I had some similar thoughts, but shock rebuild is recommended at 50k and I was at 60k, so I went ahead and replaced them with new from Rockauto (they had the best prices I could find). I think I paid around $1400, then sold my used shocks for $600. A little disappointed that I noticed almost...
I have the exact problem you are describing. Replaced my shocks. Only a very small improvement. I've ordered leaf springs as I'm on the original shit ones from the factory. I'm confident this is the issue for me, maybe it's the same for you if you're still on stock leaf springs.
What a journey. Glad you got it figured out. The hood causing this is the first time I've heard this type of thing on any vehicle, it's crazy. Sucks that it cost so much time and money! Truck looks sick too
This is interesting and makes sense to me. Especially when you consider the time it takes to do it the "old" way. Time is money and technology has come a long way so I can see where doing a flush with the method you described would be a good route to go. My only question is regarding the...
Would love to know how they did it, this starter was not coming out without doing something significant. Mine is a '17, is yours newer? I wouldn't expect there to be a change, but maybe.
Ok, I got the starter replaced. This did fix the weird metallic sound that has been going on.
I notched out a corner of the motor mount. I don't believe that it will affect anything structurally with the mount. This is only my opinion, so perform this at your own risk and discretion. The...
Hard to tell exactly from the video, but this sounds very similar to a weird sound that I had on my truck for almost a year. It sounded very similar to something loose with the exhaust. I finally tracked it down to the starter. I confirmed by starting the truck when cold, then hitting the...
Same for me, for non-live valves on my 2017. I think the rears did not come up for a 2017, but did for a 2018. Probably best to search by part number. I did have a rear shock start leaking within a few hundred miles and rock auto worked out a warranty replacement for me. No issues since.
Don’t forget trips to the mall and MACdonalds. My truck has eibachs in the front from previous owner. I’m getting 1” lift with leaf springs to compensate.
Thanks for all of the feedback gents (and others)
I’m looking forward to the new springs, my only regret is waiting this long to get them.
I’ve only used this truck as a daily up to this point, but since recently moving to Colorado I’m planning to take advantage of the great runs around here.
Daily driver with occasional light off roading and some fun runs around Colorado/Utah. Nothing too crazy and no big jumps. You think traction bars instead of bump stop kit? I can't swing both right now on top of new springs and shackles.
I've read more threads on these items than I can remember. I've collected some information and was hoping to have some feedback, confirmation, and/or clarification.
I going to buy new leaf springs for my 2017 and I'm attempting to understand what else I should look to buy/install at the same...
Thanks for the suggestion. I've had the cam phaser TSB completed and since the noise changes when I hit the starter with a wooden handle, I'm pretty confident the issue is isolated to this area.
I’m not 100%. I have a strange metallic sound when I start the engine and it is not at normal operating temps. I narrowed it down to this area and was able to “bang” on the starter which causes the noise to stop, start again, change intensity, etc. I questioned if it’s an issue with the flex...
