Yes.. That is the only thing engaging and keeping the locking ring engaged.
And atmospheric pressure coming into the diaphragm area.
All four parts of the IWE..
The spring that engages and holds the locking gear onto the hub gear.

I know one thing.. Do not want to lose this event because someone ran out of talent or worse.. I know I speak for many and do not want to see the cost skyrocket because of insurance rate hike!

That is the reason I am kicking myself for selling 2011 SCab and getting 2012 SCrew.
Not worth the headaches with the torsen.
I am seriously considering it or scrapping 4wd all together.
-Greg (aka Squatting Dog)
What is causing that noise is the needle bearings in your hub is going out. There is metal or some other form of junk in it. When you are out of 4wd the axle is stationary and hub is rotating. Locked in 4wd the axle and hub are both turning, so no noise.

Wouldn't need an 11 whole front axle, just the center section guts. There has only been two 2010-11 that I know of that have had IWE problems (BigJ and WSI). No issues with being on top perch with 2010-11 that I am aware.

Torsen makes it worse.. Pre-torsen F150 would get about 50k-75k before needing replacement (unless vacuum line issue or IWE solenoid moisture problem). In 2012 Raptor owners that used 4wd would get approx 5k-7500 miles before the locking ring would be worn down.
Ford did test an upgraded IWE...
I have had my swaybar off since about 5000 miles, now at 50,000 miles. Still eat through IWE and CV boots like nobody's business. The only thing I can think why the swaybar changes the clunking is it the lower a arm is not connected to the frame by the swaybar the clunk is not transmitted to the...
I STRONGLY believe the torsen is exploiting/contributing to the existing weakness in the IWE system. It is finding the weakest link in the system. That is why I am going to test it on my personal Raptor and beat on it. If the issue still exists or causes issues with the torsen, I full intend to...
Conceptually yes.. As it stands now with ford current system you have to stop.. Turn the knob on the dash wait for the hubs to lock (hopefully).. Then go 4 wheeling with no guarantee the IWE system will hold together.
-Greg (aka Squatting Dog)
That is another version to add manual locking hubs and get rid of the IWE all together.
Right now RCV us working on a upgraded locking ring/collar. This would fully lock the hubs to the axles.
I am working on version 2 which would eliminate the IWE and current hub setup. With a locking manual...
