I would look for a 13 or higher if you plan on going off road at all. Ford added a reinforced rear frame at the bump stop unless you are planning to add aftermarket bump stop if that then a 10-12 would do just fine. My 12 was ok stock but I wasnt happy until I added 3.0s after that it was badass :).
I real need to use my truck bed as was intended so I can haul stuff. I made attachments on teh bed bolts and installed 3/4in ply wood coated and so far I love it. I am going to change it to 3/16s aluminum sheet soon. SO in 3 minutes I can remove all and have the empty bed

There could be a coil or plug issue going on which could explain the mpg loss but that would send codes but, you said there were no codes correct? A torque converter could do the same and wouldn't have any codes.
As smurf said just reading a symptom is at most 10% accuracy . For me if I drove it I most likely tell you 90% what it was. Revving it in neutral might not cause the load needed to make it shutter. The shutter might come from the pressure generated when the converter pushes fluid under the load...
