There is always movement at that location with flex or whatever. That part should not bind under heat and cause the thump. They checked all bolts and brackets in that area for torque. Your lower shaft moves but I'm assuming it doesn't bind/thump like mine. I'm thinking about putting a GoPro down...
The thump is definitely coming from that part. That's the only thing i'm moving and it's the same sensation I get in the steering wheel. I had my friend move it just as i'm doing while I sat inside and held the steering wheel. Does yours make that thumping sound in my video(turn up your volume)...
Here is the new (second replacement updated part# NL3Z-3B676-B) lower shaft after driving it home from the dealer (hot). You can see the grease where the yellow rubber is sliding on the shaft. Still thumping...
No, the lower shaft is a two piece design (one going into the other). One part bolts to the shaft coming out of the firewall and the other to the steering rack. All i'm doing is lightly, with two fingers pulling up to the sky then pushing down to the ground. The noise/thump is coming from that...
The heat will melt that adhesive. There is a binding issue with the metal expansion or something within that shaft from the heat. It's gets so hot you can't touch it without a rag or gloves.
Update: The updated part number was installed. We did a side by side comparison before the swap and they were both are identical. The only difference was the updated lower shaft had grease where they slide into each other and mine was dry. After driving around and testing the updated shaft it...
Update: After looking at part numbers thinking one day Ford might update the lower steering shaft with a new part number, I noticed Ford did. I notified my dealership that there is an updated part number for the lower steering shaft (Replaced once before NL3Z-3B676-A). They placed an order to...
Check yours after a 7 mile drive. It will be hot so be careful. When you do it once let it stay in place for about 10 seconds, then try moving it again. It seems to be sicking.
I agree, but if the fix would be the lower shaft (even though it was replaced once already) I think I would be happy. Unless, Ford wants to take mine and give me an R. :p
Sounds like mine is more. It's going to have some movement but should not do what mine is doing where it causes a thumping feeling into the steering wheel. This is all with one or two fingers with very minimal pressure. I tested my friends 2021 -35, it's defiantly not like mine. My other friends...
The first video was cold and it doesn't do it. It shouldn't behave this way and cause a thumping feeling or sound in the steering wheel. It seems to me like it's a bad run of lower steering shafts.
Here is what I found for my original thumping/tapping issue, there is no binding or thumping. The first video is when the truck is cold the rest are when the truck is driven about 5 miles or so.
Here are two separate issues that has started after the replacement of the steering column. With slight movement of the steering wheel I have a rattle. It’s coming from behind the steering wheel and in front of that two piece plastic cover. If I hold down that two piece cover it stops. The turn...
Just to clarify this post and the parts replaced:
NL3Z 3C529 E - Column Assembly - Steering
ML3Z 3E751 B - Shaft Assembly - Steering
With required nuts/bolts/washers needed for those parts.
I'm still waiting for my Field Service Engineer appointment.
Mine didn't sound like that, it was more of a sharp squeak. Maybe yours could just be worse. Does it make that noise when you turn off the truck or when you push the start button without completely starting the truck?
Does the sound/squeak tone change when you select different exhaust modes? It...
