So I spent most of the day running around the backcountry at illegal speeds, when I was supposed to be working :peace:
I ran the chopped out washboard roads that started this whole thing, some really high speed rolling sand trails with decent sized whoops and g outs, and a bunch of other...
I started to, but you really can't see much from it.
The differences kind of have to be felt...
So far the fox's are smoother on the small stuff that was such a thorn in the icons side.
The spring rate is also much more appropriate, I feel like I'm driving the whole truck rather than just...
Fox's are in.
Did a couple of quick offroad runs and some around town driving, and I can say they are indeed very different.
Spring rates are more balanced front to rear for sure.
I'll spend the day tomorrow running them on the same choppy roads as the icons saw at lower speeds, then hit the...
Small delay here, I've been hearing some grumbling from the rear.
Did a rear end rebuild in my driveway yesterday, joe dirt style !
Found this on the drivers side carrier bearing.
Suspicious, as I had ford change an axle seal three weeks ago. The axle bearings were fine, just a bit of sand...
Don't know the load ratings.
I do know that 500 pounds in the bed drops the rear of the truck quite a bit with the nationals.
More than the stock springs.
You'll be fine with just a rzr on behind. Just don't load it too far forward of the trailer axle and you won't even notice it back there.
They did consider it, but Deaver or national style leafs aren't towing friendly, the stock springs still have an overload leaf.
Lets face it, most raptors are street queens.
You sound like you think you just purchased a trophy truck !
:secret:
Well, the important thing for me is a wide performance envelope. That makes tuning to a specific person's needs less critical.
And let's face it, our needs aren't the same every day.
I want to blast whoops, run twisty fireroads at mach chicken, float across washboard at 20 mph and crawl...
Hi Dylan,
Great write up, nice to see the angle you were coming at it with.
Just to clarify, in the above statement you are referring to the bottoming piston, no ?
So far what I'm seeing is the icons being great at high speed rolling terrain style stuff. Excellent bottoming resistance...
Droop travel is just as important as compression travel.
Actually more so.
Also the goal is to keep the centre of gravity as low as possible with lots of travel still available.
Once you are looking for that kind of travel, a four link makes a lot more sense than a leaf spring setup.
To jack...
You remove the block.
The RPG is +2 now. It was originally only +1, but had sagging issues.
Run the +3 only if you will be carrying some kind of weight in the bed. +2 if no weight.
You do not want to run icons, especially with the top perch setting, if you are complaining about the stock...
I don't care about the rear honestly, that's not where the performance difference is any of the three brands.
They are all 3" external bypass dampers, with very little differences in actual performance, just differences in add on features.
I prefer the icons here due to the shin guards, quiet...
You must be speaking of the rear 3" external bypass, no ?
The fox coilovers have no adjustments.
But neither do the icons effectively, as the lowest position is still too stiff for the smaller chop that I spend lots of time on.
I'm staying with the icons out back for now, they seem to be...
Shoot, if you want the straps throw them on. They look cool, I get it.
But bare in mind that there are 0 reported failures or wear related to the suspension droop being limited by the dampers. There is nothing special about your truck, there are 1000's more out there with the same suspension...
I've gone back and forth a few times.
Both with stock and icons.
I like it better on with the stock dampers as chassis response is more linear when exiting corners. I run some very fast fire roads that leave the brakes smoking after a few miles. Kind of rally car territory.
It was better on...
Nah, they'd be further out for me yet. Not position sensitive at all, kind of a one trick pony so to speak.
The icons have the benefit of the bottoming piston and cup.
If the kings were used with a bit longer travel and auxiliary bump stops, they'd be alright. With their linear damping...
We will see, I can only try all the 3.0 offerings and see if anything works for me.
It's all about the kind of terrain you spend the most time on.
The icons are great on pavement, I'm running no sway bar and seeing less body roll than the stock setup with the sway bar on. But that does not...
The spring rate doesn't help, but it's not the entire issue.
Certainly changing it to a softer one would help, but I suspect the heavier spring rate is there for a reason.
I'm sure the icon guys have arrived at this as the best compromise between ride and performance.
The heavier compression...
The fox/RPG coilovers are on the way via ups.
Probably be a week or so before I've got them changed over.
I'll pick a few loops to run and push the icons hard, change the coilovers that evening and run the same loops with the RPGs the next day.
I'll try to keep some notes to share.
The lack...
