Yes definitely time for a rebuild on the shocks. The rebuild is straight forward but can get intimidating if you don't know some of the steps in rebuilding them.

The 5.4s have a different piston and shim stack and the rear reservoir has only 1 seal on the cap. Weight difference is maybe 80-100lbs, not sure if thats enough to make a difference but they did change when the 6.2's came out.
Just had a conversation about this while rebuilding shocks the other day, and we just were't sure it would be worth it with the amount of testing it would take. I'm not sure if anyone has taken the time to test a set, I think most people(shops included) say screw it and get 3.0's+.
