If its transmitting it would be unwise to remove the antenna as it could burn up your finals. I hope you mean it was receiving a signal from something.
Its possible you have tone squelch enabled. Make sure you have it set to none unless you are getting interference from something else on the...
Unless you're using a dipole or beam type antenna, you will need some kind of ground plane. Whether it be the vehicle or radials at the base of the antenna. You don't need to drill a new hole. Just keep that in mind for the future.
I have mine mounted on the bed rail... I'm always using mine...
My best friend and a couple local hams have the 8900, it's a good radio. Only down side is unless there are a lot of 6m and 10m FM repeaters in your area you won't use those two bands often.
It could be one of several things or it could be a combination of a couple. it's possible you could have bad coax, or you could have a bad antenna. It could be poor antenna location or it could be inproperly tuned antenna. Magmounts do not help your cause.
A good SWR meter will help you...
Here is a video on what to mod. I just used a xacto knife to pop it off.
That antenna will work. The reason I say go with a tri band antenna is you can only use 10m fm with that radio and you need a general ticked to use that portion of the band. Unfortunately 10m wont be open again for another...
Don't worry about getting a antenna for 10m with that radio. Comet makes some nice tri band antenna that covers 2m/70cm/6m Tri-Band | Comet Antenna
If you haven't yet you will need to mod that radio to talk on the frequencies we use on the runs.
I have the 8800 which is the same radio...
Im guessing he is talking about a bert two speed style racing transmission. They dont operate like a normal transmission.
Your best bet it to pick up a cheap one from harbor freight. Mount it on the trailer. 3k or 4k should be plenty to drag it on.
So is running more then 1500 watts...... It doesn't stop hams from doing it.
What it boils down to is if you're not causing harmful interference or being a complete ass to others on the air the FCC wont bother you. They don't have the resources to handle every complaint they receive.
Icom is just a brand along with Kenwood, Yaesu, TYT, baofeng ect.....
The big three have radios that cover HF, UHF and VHF. All require a mod to make them transmit in that range
They are good when you have a wide coverage repeater system like my local pd and county sheriff has. We dont have the luxury of having a repeater system where anybody can use. There is one near rausch creek but unless you have your licens you cant use it.
