Circling back on this thread: Dealer replaced the cam phasers under warranty. Noise on startup in my earlier videos is gone.
Bozeman Ford added a classy "valued Ford customer touch" and went out of their way to get a credit card number from to ensure they could charge me the $17 difference...
I got under the truck today, and tugged on the end links. Each one made a slight but definite metallic noise when I pulled. There was a very slight bit of play I could feel but not see. Otherwise solid.
I'm thinking that they should be solid and noiseless when tugged on? If so, I suspect this...
OP here. I haven't abandoned the thread, but my dealer is so busy that the appointment I scheduled after my OP was weeks out (now next Monday). I sent the video of the startup over to the dealer (first post) and they said they don't hear anything abnormal. I can appreciate that they aren't...
I was on a dirt road in the first part, and a paved road in the second part. It's pretty darn annoying, and definitely taking away from my enjoyment of the truck to hear that constantly.
I have been wondering about the end links myself. I'll put it on some ramps and have a look under there...
Please help me diagnose this noise!
Video of the noise from inside the cab (I'm going to try to get a buddy to stand on the side of the road next and get some video from outside too):
Truck Details: 2018 Raptor, ~30k miles, bone stock, garage kept, appropriately used.
Description of issue...
@Antho Thank you, this is what I love about forums. Ask a question, get an answer and documentation. Very helpful.
I'm pissed this is the second significant repair on a truck with less than 30k. I hope they shampoo my engine too, might make me feel better.
@Antho thanks for your thoughts. Do you know what exactly they replaced? Anything I should be pushing for the dealer might not offer up?
Good tip on not leaving with them while parts ship, especially now with messed up supply chains, random stuff is taking forever to ship and it seems...
Started hearing this on start up for the first time a few days ago. Only cold startup after sitting overnight or longer. Comparing to other vids that identify cam phaser rattle, I think it's the cam phasers. Do you guys agree? (29k miles, October 2018 build, Jan '19 delivery, only service work...
Follow-up: So the dealer redeemed itself from the terrible initial visit and response, and (after some serious noise on my part) was extremely responsive, and has been very helpful. So that's good. Here's where I am with this:
Cupped Tires: The alignment was spot on (I have the printout). No...
Mt 2 cents: You have a very strong argument that Ford/the dealer must carry through with anything you started to address during the warranty period, even after it expired. So document it carefully (send emails, and keep the chain going, very handy as a diary of your issues with date stamps)...
@smufslayer
I think we're talking cupping, not feathering. The uneven pattern is every other tread block wearing on the inside band as you move around the circumference of the tire, not uneven wear across the tire from inside to out. See graphic below. what I am seeing is more like what it...
@smufslayer, This is decidedly NOT even treadwear that is excessive on the inside. Every other tread block (on the inside) is more worn than the one before or after, and more worn at the front than the back of the tread block. That's why I tend to think that the failure to cross rotate (and...
I typically run mnfgr recommended inflation (38 here, if I recall). I add a few pounds in the rear when towing my micro-camper (about 1,500 lbs).
@CoronaRaptor, they were absolutely mis-rotated (front to back, not cross rotated, see below for long and boring story) do you think that's...
I am trying to trouble shoot cupped front tires and a front end rattle, and would welcome any feedback or experience you all have. Here is some relevant info:
Truck: 2018 Raptor, 23k miles, bought new, no modifications, original tires rotated three times over course of 23k miles, sees mostly...
I gather they're moving all of the road going Ford Performance Driving School classes to Charlotte Motor Speedway starting next spring. Raptor Assault will stay in UT. They had already started to clear out the road cars from the reception room when we were there. A chinese company company...
Another user satisfied with the KO2s in the winter here (long Montana winters, and a little less than 100 inches a year at my house and weekly trips into the mountains). Personally I wouldn't swap out perfectly good KO2s for the sake of a different winter tire, but I agree with previous...
You can take as many of your own pics as you want, where you want, and a go pro is fine as long you use a suction mount (no sticky mounts or clamp mounts allowed).
I think the insurance is worth it if it frees you up to explore the capability of the trucks more. I believe you can still sign up for it at registration. To be honest, I didn't realize the deductible was so high, which makes a legitimate question.
Thanks. RA course aside, the Tooele Valley...
I went down to Tooele, UT for the Raptor Assault course a few weeks ago. Thought I'd share my impressions for others weighing whether to go next year (I think they are close to wrapping up for this year, I even saw some pics on instagram of the trucks plowing through some serious snow).
This...
I use the Weathertech seat cover. It drapes over the rear seat bottom and seatback, with loops that go over the headrests and anchors that go between the seat bottom and back.
Pros: reasonably priced, very good protection, high quality construction/materials, install and remove in a few...
I like the relatively soft initial feel, and long travel. I find that when you get into them there is plenty of bite. What I don't like so much is the inconsistent feel. To me it feels like the brakes go between soft and grabby at lower speeds, for instance when coming up to a red light, or...
I think that looks like pretty good residual value for a vehicle that cost approx. $70k vehicle when new. I just did a quick search for a 2017 BMW X5 x35i with about 30k miles, which is a car that cost about $70k when new once optioned, and I see dealers listing them at resale for about $40 to...
