Hey John (I assume your name is John).
I think I'll try both your recommendations if I have time (Smith Mesa and Kolob Rd). It looks like Kolob Rd enters Zion National Park. Is a park pass needed to travel the road? We'll be getting a park pass, but it will likely be later in our trip.
