MarkT has been suggesting for a while that I post the contents of the recovery and survival gear that I carry with us on our runs. This is a long one so hang in there. I am open to all suggestions on better upgrades, newer gear , etc. Okay the first pic shows that I have a bedrug installed with the Bakflip cover and in that shot the cargo management system is engaged. There is dust and dirt everywhere, I make no apologies....I offroad!!!

These two pics show the current setup that I carry on a daily basis
IMG_3607.jpg
IMG_3608.jpg

Please note that I carry two full size shovels, both a round nose and a flat edge. The tool box is a stanley extreme box, o-ringed and moisture resistent....more on the box later
IMG_3609.jpg

With the box removed from it's mounting bracket you can see the shovels, 2 five gallon line-xed gas cans (they are tough as heck!) my five gallon water container all strapped in. I have many water containers and will carry more if required...important here in the land of little water.
IMG_3610.jpg

The next shots show the Stanley box, it is portable with extension handle and wheels to unload if you need the full bed, it is also alarmed for theft deterrent. This is a very good product.

IMG_3612.jpg

This is my homemade tie down system, just braided 1/4 inch plastic coated wire. You can place tie downs wherever you like.
IMG_3613.jpg

This is the box unloaded..a couple of things are missing. Two snatch blocks(in my garage) and the Viair 450P..will be here on Thursday
IMG_3614.jpg

The contents are listed left to right and top to bottom. red rags, survival kit(more on this later) 8000# come along, two towing straps, blanket, tarp, receiver with rings, a couple of extra D rings for hookups, pair of cold weather gloves, Cold Steel Machete, wrist rocket, small first aid kit, small leatherman with led lamp, small flashlight, BLM maps of the 8 blocks surrounding the Las Vegas area (with MarkT you never know where you will end UP...LOL)
IMG_3615.jpg

Contents continued, 100" of 3/8 rope, jumper cables, spotting scope, various bungees
IMG_3616.jpg

What are in the five black bags you ask???
IMG_3617.jpg

Hygeine bag: hand cleaners, tp, soap, toothbrushes and paste, floss. Female products for wifey, they also double in first aid kits. I keep most things in freezer bags cause they serve many uses. Small handheld trenching tool for latrine.
IMG_3619.jpg

Attachment bag: A bag full of garbage and freezer bags, various mils. These are great for water capture if we do actually catch a storm...rain ponchos, duct tape, electrical tape, 2 types of crazy glues, assortment of tiewraps
IMG_3620.jpg

Tie down and liquid transfer bag: First bag is a fuel transfer rig made for me by MarkT..I set my gas cans on top of the bed and pump into the funnel..then fuel tank. Much easier than holding the cans. Next is the CARB compliant lids when we are over in Cali..the third is a liquid xfer hand pump for water.Four ratcheting tie downs.
IMG_3621.jpg

Tire bag: for repair and some wire rope clamps for the bed
IMG_3622.jpg

Tool Bag: various handtools, sockets, wrenches, small folding saw and hatchet
IMG_3623.jpg

This is the survival kit, I have several of these, one in each vehicle and when we hike we always take one along, molle or belt friendly. Weighs a little over a pound and fits in an ammo carrier. See m4040's website for more info on this rig. He is the baseline. Kit contains; 50' paracord, small dish for boiling water or food prep, signal reflector, multi purpose knife, small leatherman, magnesium firestarter, space blanket, sutures, duct tape, ferrous rod firestarter, fishing rigs, water purifier, small LED light, upholstery and clothes needles, compass, survival drinking straw, nail wrapped with 25' snare wire, Bic lighter, bobbins with fishing line and weights, safety pins, storm whistle, fresnel lens

IMG_3625.jpg

Whew, did you make it this far......

What is not pictured in the raptor...complete change of clothes and shoes...CB radio.....more bottled water...sleeping bag

and of Course The Zombie Bag!!!!! extensive but private.....

I hope this helps with some of the newer people, this may seem like way to much to some. But when you are 75 miles away from town in the middle of the desert, you have to take care of yourself and your group.

Incredible assortment of recovery gear! I want you to come out with us every time we go just so I know what we'll have with us :)

I'm guessing you wouldn't have room for all that gear if you went camping - that's the challenge I have - how to bring all the camping gear, water, firewood, etc., etc. AND the recovery gear/tools, etc.

Having you along will enable me to worry and pack less

PS: Hey! Your tie down "system" looks familiar
Cool that you went with something like this: http://www.svtoffroad.com/showthread.php?217-Bed-Tie-Down-Options&p=1550#post1550

Thanks Dan, all that gear only takes up about 1/3 of the bed and some of it doubles as camping gear. Yes the tie down system was alot like yours, I remembered it from your original posting. A good idea never dies!!!! Did you see my post on campgrounds on the Mormon Wells trail video thread? A nice camping area.

I'm looking forward to getting you and your wife on a weekend trip. It'll be great to see you and all the others who have yet go out on a group wheeling/camping trip.

I'll keep planning trips and hope that folks can make it.

Thanks for the detailed list.
Thats one of the many great things the Raptor has over the Jeep- you can actually bring stuff. I really had to scale back my packing with the Wrangler, now I can bulk up again.

Wow! Some great ideas you've given me to include when I venture out into the great unknown, 'Dawg. I like the sling shot...is that for killing small game?

Yes, I practice with it regularly and shoot both the steel ball bearings and small marbles with it. You can even stun surface swimming fish with them. It is quiet....stealthy is the way to go.

Thanks 'Dawg... I'm still amazed at how much stuff you managed to cram and pack into such a small space. Love those metal (Line-X'd) gas cans too... no strong gas odor under the bed cover like you can get with plastic gas cans...:thumbsup::thumbsup:

More on the Warn shackles...
I ordered the shackles online and saw that they were about the same price as most of the US made shackles (about double the price of the Chinese made shackles). I was very surprised to see that they were made in China!!

Update: I sent the Warn shackles back and have some US made Columbus McKinnon units on their way from usariggingsupply.com. They were a little cheaper than the Warn units, are hot dip galvanized (vs painted) and are rated higher for the same size (6-1/2 tons vs 4-3/4 tons). Overall a much better deal.

Hmmm, I just bought a Warn hitch reciever w/ shackle. It says "WARN" and "USA" on the part that slides into the receiver and "WLL4-3/4T" "WARN" "3/4" on the shackle. The "WARN" is even smeard with red paint to make the stamped leatering stand out. The shackle pin reads "XY1OHS". It all appears hot dip galvanized. I got it off of E-Bay for around $47.00 - I think. I don't recall the load rating. I bought it just because it was a Warn. Hope its a good one.
