I did cam phasers in my garage, and you can too!

That's EXTREMELY kind of you to say, and perhaps the most genuine and sincere compliment I've received in a long time. Thank you, that means a lot to me!

Fantastic write-up, I appreciate the observations. And I am relieved to hear that this failure presumably can't happen with the ML3Z iteration. I meant to snag photos of the other three this past weekend - but I did this repair up at my cabin, and I didn't end up making it up there as planned...

What did you do to your Raptor today? (Gen2)

Those are great. Had one on my Super Duty.

I neglected to mention that 6 Red Bulls was supplemented with 6 Garage Beers under Ford's Customer Satisfaction Program 69B420. Substitute those out and you should be good to go. Apologies for the confusion. Oh, and GO BLUE!! NATTY BABY!

Thank you for your insight. I will pull the others apart this weekend and keep you in the loop. Yes, that plastic cap was 100% worn off. The locking pin you show in the photo had a small piece of that plastic inside of it. The best way to describe it is that it looked like someone just snapped...

To each their own. This is definitely not a job to take on if you aren't up to it or comfortable doing it.

I did cam phasers in my garage, and you can too!

My service history states that a phaser repair was performed under TSB 20-2315 in Nov 2020. It says that the PCM was reprogrammed. Alright, here are pictures of both sides of what I have left of the phaser. I threw out the bolts/lock pin/etc - I just kept this as a desk ornament really. I'm...

Yes, I did remove the cam caps and I saw nothing abnormal

You’re saying that channel shouldn’t be there at all, and you haven’t seen this before? Great lmao! I’ll get you pics ASAP.

The well pin hole was worn on the gear side as well, but not as bad. I’ll grab pics of the other pieces tomorrow and post them. Plastic piece was there. Solenoid screens were clean. I’m not privy enough to know what’s typical and atypical wear, so if this is unusual I definitely would like to...

Hmm, interesting. Thanks for the info. What I said regarding the change was from the former head of Ford’s VVT program. I could have understood him wrong. I don’t see any open recalls / CSP’s for 21B10 - I’ll have to double check my printed out service history tomorrow. The cam journals all...

Haha, thanks. Book time is 9.8 hours and I guesstimated that it would take me about 20. Vastly undershot that. I am confident that if I did it again I could get close to that mark.

Thank you. Although it was difficult to tell, they appeared to be just fine / not stretched. I come from a motorcycle background. The rule of thumb there is to always replace the chain and sprockets at the same time, or else you risk excessive wear. I carried this methodology over to this...

I did cam phasers in my garage, and you can too!

Thank you! Well, the dealer quoted me 4.5 labor hours and $1400 to do it. Lmao. I kind of was looking for relief after spending so much time on this truck. For that price, absolutely doing it myself. I think 4.5 labor hours is a bit excessive - if I'm throwing a dart at a board I'm saying it'd...

I did cam phasers in my garage, and you can too!

Hi everyone, As the title says, I just completed a cam phaser job in my garage by myself. I hope that sharing my experience with you can help you out if you decide to go down this path yourself. Feel free to ask questions and I would be glad to respond. My truck: 2018, 97k miles. Phasers had...
